Luggage advice

When travelling to the Isles of Scilly, remember to pack lightly and efficiently, as luggage space may be limited on the boat, plane or helicopter servicing the islands.

How luggage works…

Travelling by Scillonian or Scilly Ferries

Non-essential vehicles are not allowed onto the Quay at Penzance, both to mantain emergency access and as large numbers of pedestrians and cars don’t mix well in the limited space available. There is also very limited legal drop-off points nearby which means if you have a number of cases to drop off, it can be very difficult, especially if you have children or dogs to look after. It’s often very busy and it’s no fun if you are one the left to sort everything out while a travelling companion looks for somewhere to park, especially if it is cold, dark and raining sideways. For these reasons it is highly recommended that if you are driving, you use a Park & Ride service such as Scilly Parking, who will drop you, your passengers and luggage, together, as close to the Quay as can reasonably be achieved.

If you are travelling aboard Scillonian, you will be allowed to carry a piece of hand luggage about your person but most of your baggage will be loaded into a shipping container and placed into the hold of the ship. Check your luggage will conform to the standard allowance provided in your ticket price, at the time of booking. Some items such as paddleboard may incur additional charges or require special packing but it’s far easier to sort this out over the phone before you arrive.

As you walk along the Harbour in Penzance you will see a number of freight handlers in fluorescent jackets, standing next to a number of shipping containers laid out along the quayside. Each shipping container is intended for a different destination, so tell the freight team your destination and they will ensure your bags go into the right container.

It makes sense to label your bags – (with enough information that they can be identified and returned to you if lost) – before you reach the Quay but there will be labels available there if you need them. If you are travelling to an Island other than St Mary’s you will need to add a coloured label, which corresponds with the Island where you are staying, to any items of baggage going into the hold. Assuming you have added the correct coloured label, you should then see your luggage again on your destination Island.

There is also the option to have your bags delivered to accommodation on St Mary’s. Just let the freight team is you would prefer this to collecting your bags from the Quay on St Mary’s and they will ensure that it goes into the correct container. Your bags will then be delivered direct to your accommodation and the relevant haulier will leave an invoice behind to be settled while you are on the Islands, at which time you can arrange return collection. Generally you are looking at a ballpark cost of around £2 per bag for delivery but prices vary a little so you might want to ask your accommodation provider if they are able to provide further details.

Travelling by Helicopter or Plane

The most important thing to bear in mind when travelling by air to the Isles of Scilly is to check the airlines baggage rules before arriving. Skybus and the Penzance Helicopters both operate small aircraft, meaning that luggage weight is relatively significant. Overweight luggage may not be able to travel on the same flight or may be subject to a significant excess luggage fee. Likewise if you are carrying items prohibited by CAA rules then the check-in staff will need these removed from your baggage before the flight proceeds.

Label your bags just in case.

The good news is that all of the airfields involved in travel between the Isles of Scilly and the mainland are very small so finding baggage reclaim is always a doddle.

In the very unlikely event your luggage is lost or an item is damaged you need to report it and receive a receipt for your report, before you leave the Airport. Without this you may not be able to submit a claim.

If you are travelling to another Island after landing then generally you will need to carry your own luggage onto an inter-island boat, which might mean carrying it down wet granite steps and onto a moving boat. If you have mobility or other issues which would make this difficult for you, ask for advice from your accommodation provider or the relevant inter-island boat service provider in advance of travel.
